Over five years after the release of the hit konkani movie - Nachom-ia Kumpasar - the son of one of its protagonists, the legendary Chris Perry, has said that he has filed a suit against its makers for allegedly defaming the late musician.
Glenn Perry told the media on Thursday that he has filed a libel suit against director Bardroy Barretto for Rs 1,000 crores.
Perry said, in the lawsuit filed on Monday, Barretto has been sued for personality rights and defamation. Barreto however said he is yet to be served the plaint or any notice.
The plaint filed by Perry Jr, accuses Barretto of prudent and calculated misappropriation and a fraudulent exploitation of Goa’s legend Chris Perry’s name for commercial gains.
“My father is an angel. He never hurt anyone. He always helped everyone. He was a wonderful, simple, down to earth man. I love my father very much. It is painful to hear these rumours and negative stories about my father,” he said.
In a bid to explain the delay of five years in filing the suit, Perry Jr said he had suffered a massive brain stroke and almost died. “I was in the hospital for 22 days. My left side is paralyzed and I am struck with all the after effects of the stroke,” he added.
Barreto, meanwhile, said he has not been served notice of the suit.
“But going by the statements made to the media, I’m quite thrilled that we are sued for Rs 1000 crores. Going by that figure, I don’t know whether to take it seriously or not,” Barreto told The Goan when contacted for his reaction.
Barreto said, Glenn Perry should first see the film, which only celebrates the songs.
“The movie is not about Chris Perry or Lorna but a representation of all Goan musicians of that era,” Bardroy said, adding that the suit if true will only be good news for the film as it will attract publicity and keep it relevant for longer.
The film has earned raving reviews and has clocked hundreds of screenings across Goa and the globe. It touches on lives, both on-stage and off-stage, of musicians in an era where Konkani melody came of age.
Central to the film is the persona of the legendary duo of Chris Perry and Lorna Cordeiro, who together produced some of Konkani’s greatest everlasting hits which continue to regale audiences more than half a century later.
The controversy at the root of the dispute between Perry Jr and the film’s director Bardroy Barreto is the movie’s alleged portrayal of the off-stage affair between Perry Sr and Lorna.
